Lois Rowlands Counselling
“Choosing the right therapist is so important. My website aims to give a flavour of how I work and what you can expect from therapy with me.”
About me
Years ago, a friend took the time to deeply listen to me as I talked with her about a confusing and difficult time in my life. She didn’t judge or tell me what to do, but gently and carefully gave me the space and time to work things out. It was such a powerful conversation that I still remember the way she made me feel to this day.
That’s what I aim to do as a therapist.
Our relationship in therapy is the most important aspect of how we will work together. I will do my best to listen to you without judgement, being open to where you want our conversation to go, and being honest with you.
I’ve worked at a local family support charity called Home-Start for the past ten years and been its manager for four of those years. The charity trains volunteers to offer nonjudgemental support to families with young children in the families’ own homes. I’ve seen first hand many times how being listened to and supported can be life changing.
While working at Home-Start, I wanted to learn more about supporting people by listening, so I undertook a four-year degree in Humanistic Counselling at the University of Chichester.
I’ve also worked a counsellor within the NHS, offering counselling to staff members as part of the Universities Hospitals Sussex staff occupational health department.
In counselling session, we might…
Talk through where you are in your life right now. You might need me to just listen. Or you might want me to challenge you. You might want to talk about things that happened long ago, or talk about things that are affecting you right now.
What we talk about is up to you – and it’s my role to make the space and time for you to do this.
Sometimes I may ask questions to clarify my understanding, or I may notice patterns in your story and experiences.
The process of talking things through together, and being listened to, can help you to find a way forward.

What can I help with?
It can feel strange to have the time and space to talk about your experiences and thoughts. You might wonder if you’ll run out of things to say. You might feel self-conscious. With me, you can take your counselling sessions at your own pace, telling me what you feel able to, at a pace that feels OK for you. You might decide that you just need one or two sessions. Or you might decide you need more time. It’s up to you.
